## The short answer

A yurt gets you into a comfortable, four-season dwelling for roughly a third of the cost of a stick-built cabin, in about a tenth of the time. A cabin, in return, offers unlimited layout flexibility and easier resale in traditional markets. The right choice depends on your land, timeline, and how you want to live.

## Cost per square foot

- **Yurt (turnkey, insulated, on deck):** $80–$140 per sq ft.
- **Small cabin (contractor-built):** $250–$450 per sq ft in mountain markets.
- **Owner-built cabin:** $150–$250 per sq ft, plus 12–24 months of your weekends.

## Build time

A Secret Creek 24' yurt kit ships in 4–8 weeks and raises in 2–3 days. A comparable cabin typically runs 8–14 months from foundation to certificate of occupancy.

## Permitting

Many Colorado, Oregon, and Washington counties classify a yurt as a temporary or accessory structure, meaning simpler permits and lower property tax exposure. A cabin is a full permanent dwelling — expect a full building permit, engineered plans, and impact fees. Always confirm with your local planning office.

## Comfort and livability

Modern insulated yurts hold heat as well as a well-built cabin. Where they differ:

- Yurts have one open round room — great for couples, harder for families that want separate bedrooms.
- Cabins are quieter in heavy wind or hail.
- Yurts have a stronger connection to the outdoors — the skylight dome and operable windows are hard to beat.

## Long-term value

A well-maintained yurt lasts 20–30+ years. Covers are replaceable every 12–15 years. A cabin holds resale value better in most markets, but a yurt gets you living on your land _now_ instead of five years from now.

## Which is right for you?

If you want to be on your property this season, a yurt wins. If you're planning a forever home on titled land with financing, a cabin makes sense. Many of our customers do both: yurt first, cabin later, yurt stays as a guest house.
