Question 1

How long does a yurt last?

Accepted Answer

With proper care and maintenance, a Secret Creek yurt can last for decades. The wooden frame is built to withstand the elements, and the fabric covers can be replaced over time as needed to extend its life. In fact, the first yurt we ever built over 40 years ago is still standing today and is now on its third set of "skins," a good example of just how long they can last when properly maintained.

Question 2

Can I live in a yurt year-round?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely! Many of our customers use their yurts as full-time residences or getaways. With proper insulation and the addition of heating and cooling systems, they can be made comfortable in all seasons, making them a practical option for year-round living or retreat use.

Question 3

What sizes do your yurts come in?

Accepted Answer

We offer yurts in 12', 16', 20', 24', 27', and 30' diameters, with each size customizable to fit your needs and preferences. Smaller sizes like 12' and 16' work well for personal retreats, offices, or cozy backyard spaces. Mid-range options such as 20' and 24' are great for guest stays, studio use, or small families, while the larger 27' and 30' yurts are ideal for full-time living, group gatherings, or larger open-concept spaces.

Question 4

Do I need a building permit for a yurt?

Accepted Answer

Building permit requirements for a yurt can vary depending on your location, including your county and state regulations, as well as any local HOA guidelines. We recommend checking with your local building department early in the process, so you have a clear understanding of what's needed for your specific site.

The good news is that many areas are increasingly familiar with yurts, and our Sales Guides are here to help you navigate the process—providing information, documentation, and support making it as smooth and straightforward as possible.

Question 5

Depending on the size and complexity, most can be set up in 1–3 days with a small crew using our detailed installation guide. Along the way, our team is available to provide phone and video support, and for customers within our service area, we also offer professional installation services if you'd prefer expert assistance.
